Third month in India – Update

by:John

Well, it’s been over two months since we first came to Hyderabad. We’ve learned a great deal about the culture, about the climate, and about ourselves since then. It’s been hard, but it’s been good and I want to give you a little run down of just some of what we’ve been up to since coming to India in the areas of: Ministry, Family, and Spiritual Growth.
Ministry: Honestly I know that my “ministry” is more than just what happens on Sunday morning or between the hours of 9-5 at Christian Broadcast Network. I have opportunities to “minister” to my family, friends, neighbors and others in my life that might not ordinarily be thought of as a ministry context. None the less, I’ll give you an update about what has been happening durring the workdays here and update you on the rest of the stuff in the other sections.
I’m really thankful to be an intern here at CBN. Interns are supposed to be working and learning at the same time and I’m really greatful that there are ample opportunities to do both here. It is a really cool place to be because, as a ministry CBN produces 5 TV shows, including one daily show that is broadcasted in Hindi in the northern parts of India that have been resistant and even violent towards the Gospel. They also let the light of Christ shine through many different relief and development projects; namely drilling wells for those who have no access to safe water and medical outreaches. They do many other works but, these are the ones that they focus on. I have found myself out on a couple of outreach trips, to see how the medical, water, and slum projects go on. I was really encouraged to be a part of it all.
Daily, I do a number of things to contribute to the work at CBN. I pray for the leaders and the work at CBN. This not only affects CBN, but aligns my heart with what He wants to do in this ministry. As well as prayer, I have many chances to come alongside with the workers and share in what they are doing. One example is with the TV shows. The producers are hard working people who do their jobs very well. I am thankful for the opportunities that we have to discuss the things that are near and dear to God’s heart. I know that through their work they touch masses of people in hard to reach places, so it’s very good to support them and encourage them in what they do. I believe God will further use us to communicate His heart for the nations.
I have also had opportunities to preach to all the other CBN employees in their chapels. This is something I love and will get to do in the future as well. I have also had an opportuntity to teach in church as well. That was fabulous and I am praying for more opportunities like this. Besides those engagments, I have been writing devotionals and other stories for the CBN website. They get many hits every month as responses to TV shows so, that is really great.
As far as the future goes: we’ll see what God brings forth. There are opportunities to serve in many areas, and I’m excited about venturing out into others. The counseling department is a 24/7 operation that continually handles calls in many languages in response to the shows. I would love to get involved there somehow, but we’ll see.
Finally, I can say that India is the crucible that the Lord has provided to refine Rachel and I. The hot hyderabadi sun, sense of isolation, trials of laundry-by-hand and other unforseen cultural nuances have definitely been uncomfortable at times for us and have even put stress on our relationship at times. But, as I was just talking with Rachel I realized that these tough times have genuinely served to refine us and force us to minister to each other in a way that we have not yet had to do. What I realized is that what I have been given is a level of relationship with my wife that I did not previously have. I see more beauty in her than I have seen before and the trials and sufferings that we have faced has really served to enlighten the beauty in our relationship. I was telling her; I don’t wish trials upon us, but I am just so thankful for what He has given me now, and whatever proceses that we may have had to endure to get to where we stand, have been well worth it. Hope that gives you some idea about where we are at.
Spiritual Growth This is really descibed above. Rache and I have really been experiencing God’s blessing in our relationships with each other and with the Lord. We’ve been praying with each other more often and this is not something that has always come natural for us as a couple. So, for those of you who pray for us, thanks!
Personally, I have found that God is really growing me here. I have had time to reflect on principles learned in the past and apply them to current situations. One example is principles of worship: namely keeping my worship genuine and sincere. Another principle is prayer: simply pray, and pray for real about issues. These are simple things but, applying them doesn’t always come natural. Thankfully, God is so gracious! And, He cares so much for us!
So, that’s all for now. We love you all!
John

Hey brother, I really enjoyed this post. It is 5am herre and I have been lying in bed thinking about what God is doing in my own life and in others – such as you and Rachel. I find that our God is an awesome God! He knows us and finds the way to show each willing person just how available he is, how good he is and how nothing in this life takes him by surprise – he holds it all together in His Capable hands.
Keep looking up – His eyes are upon you!
    Tim
